Bethesda Announces Wolfenstein: The New Order

Bethesda has officially announced Wolfenstein: The New Order.

The game is pitched as a "reimagining" of the long-running franchise. It is still is an "action-adventure shooter" and will be coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next generation consoles sometime in Q4 2013.

The game is being developed by MachineGames, the studio founded by individuals who had previously worked and helped found Starbreeze Studios, the developer behind The Darkness.

We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere,” said creative director at MachineGames Jens Matthies. “As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud.”

The official announcement trailer can be seen over on GameSpot:

More details will be revealed in the coming days.

The reveal comes after Bethesda released three images on its official Twitter account this weekend, all with an industrial theme and accompanied by the hashtag “1960”. This seems to be the studio’s preferred way of announcing its new projects these days; it recently did the same before revealing The Evil Within, posting numerous social media teases leading up to the reveal.

The last game to be released in the Wolfenstein franchise was simply called Wolfenstein and came out way back in 2009 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. While it was created using the id Tech 4 engine, we heard reports earlier this year that MachineGames was working on a project (which we assume is New Order) using the id Tech 5 engine, which was first used for Rage and is the basis of both the upcoming The Evil Within and Doom 4.
