The Comics Run: May 13, 2013

Hey, comic book world. These are the books I'm super excited for this week. We probably have different opinions, which is why this is the perfect opportunity for you to cruise it on over to the comments and strike up a healthy discussion about this week's most exciting books!

If you want a comprehensive list of everything that’s coming out this week and not just my own picks for what’s hot, check out Diamond’s shipping list.

Wonder Woman #20 - $2.99

By Brian Azzarello & Cliff Chiang | DC

The New 52 Wonder Woman is the type of book that constantly surprises, issue after issue. Better yet, it’s the kind of book that brightens your crappy Monday when you decide to look up the list of releases for the week. It’s funny and dripping with character, and the last few issues have proven that the ever-expanding cast – characters that you might not expect to thrive in a Wonder Woman series – have only added to the book’s appeal.

I can’t wait for this issue.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #23 - $3.99

By Brian Bendis & David Marquez | Marvel

After last issue’s shocking events (read my interview with Bendis about issue #22 here), this follow-up chapter has been high on my anticipation list. With the book jumping forward a year in time – a year that Miles hasn’t been Spider-Man – Bendis once again boldly changes up the status quo for this series and gives readers an all-new hook.

How did the events of #22 change Miles? What’s his relationship with his dad like? How long will he continue to resist being Spider-Man? These are all the questions awaiting us in this issue. Plus, David Marquez is back on this book, and that’s reason enough to pick this up.

Dream Thief #1 - $3.99

By Jai Nitz & Greg Smallwood | Dark Horse

The concept of this book sounds pretty cool – a man steals a an Aboriginal mask from a museum and suffers being possessed by the dead as he sleeps – but what really grabbed my attention is the artwork of newcomer Greg Smallwood.

If you check out the preview at Dark Horse’s site, you’ll see some pretty masterful storytelling at play by an artist that will no doubt be someone you’ll be hearing a lot more about in the years to come.

The Shadow #13 - $3.99

By Chris Roberson & Giovanni Timpano | Dynamite

I’ve wafted in and out of Dynamite’s Shadow since it launched last year; it never really hooked me (though Matt Wagner’s The Shadow: Year One is a different story). However, with Chris Roberson coming on board this issue, it’s time to once again give it a go, and judging by his work on Masks, I’m confident this will be the time that it sticks.

The Shadow is on the hunt for a serial killer that may or may not have a connection to a mysterious spectral figure. Plus, this Tim Bradstreet cover is badass.

Regular Show #1 - $3.99

By K.C. Green & Allison Strejlau | BOOM! Studios

Hmmm-hmmm. At long last, Mordecai and Rigby make their comic book debut in what is sure to join Boom’s own Adventure Time series as a standout all-ages series that captures the magic of the cartoon.

Joining the slacker heroes in their misadventures at the unnamed park are the usual suspects of Benson, Skips, Pops, Muscle Man, and Margaret, all making sure that we teach our kids how hilarious procrastination and laziness can be.
