Seth Meyers Confirmed to Replace Jimmy Fallon as Late Night Host

Confirming reports from earlier this year that he was NBC and Lorne Michaels' number one choice, Seth Meyers has been officially chosen as the next host of Late Night. He'll replace Jimmy Fallon, as Fallon takes over The Tonight Show next year, after Jay Leno departs that series (again).

“We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation,” said NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt. “His years at SNL‘s Weekend Update desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise.”

“I only have to work for Lorne for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car,” Meyers said, “12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice.”

Seth Meyers.

Following David Letterman leaving Late Night for CBS and Lorne Michaels taking over as producer, all of the subsquent hosts have been from Saturday Night Live, which Michaels executive produces - first Conan O'Brien (who wrote for SNL), then Fallon and now Meyers. Michaels will be very busy soon, continuing to executive produce Late Night and SNL and also taking over that position on the Fallon incarnation of The Tonight Show. With Meyers vacating his duties at SNL as both Weekend Update host and head writer, those positions will need to be filled soon as well.

So far, exact dates for the changeovers at The Tonight Show and Late Night haven't been announced.
