At the keynote for Google I/O 2013, the search giant had a pretty heavy statistic lurking in its back pocket: as of this year worldwide, there have been 900 million Android activations.
With nearly a billion people using an Android device daily, it's no surprise that Android apps are also hitting some big numbers. Google Play just crossed 48 billion app installs, and it seems to be growing at an enormous pace. In fact, Google's VP of Product Management for Android, Hugo Barra, says that in the last month alone, there have been 2.5 million downloads off of the Google Play store.
It's a major number, but it's rather understandable given the software's ubiquity in the smartphone world. Major players in the hardware industry, though dabbling in other software options, are more reliably turning to Android to provide the magic within their phones. And the increasing popularity of those products, like Samsung's current fleet, make Android's big boom a no-brainer. Right now, it's safe to say that when it comes to the sheer volume of high-quality phones, Android has everyone beat.
In their next move, Google is focused on getting more of the world, including places where the penetration of Android is less than 10%, up and running with Android.
