After Earth star Will Smith is reportedly considering starring in Warner Bros.' long-gestating remake of The Wild Bunch. Smith would also produce the film (via his Overbook banner) along with Jerry Weintraub, with whom he worked on the Karate Kid remake that starred his son Jaden Smith.
This Wild Bunch won't be a period western like the Sam Peckinpah-directed original, but rather a contemporary action thriller.
"A modern remake involving cartels south of the border, the Wild Bunch reboot is expected to follow a disgraced D.E.A. agent who assembles a team to go after a Mexican drug lord and his fortune," according to TheWrap.
The project is currently seeking a new writer to take a crack at it. David Ayer and Brian Helgeland both scripted previous drafts.
