The CW app debuted on XBox earlier today, along with full-length episodes of the network's programming -- including Nikita, Supernatural, Arrow and The Vampire Diaries -- that's available 24 hours after its initial network airing. In addition to the next-day access for the newest episode, the app will provide the four most recent episodes of each CW series. Variety first reported the details.
The launch marks a first on Xbox for TV shows, in terms of offering new episodes so soon after airing without requiring users to provide proof of being a pay-TV subscriber. Microsoft's second-screen software, SmartGlass, will also be integrated into the app. A notable use of this will be offered this week, when The Vampire Diaries airs their backdoor pilot episode for the spinoff, The Originals. Viewers watching the episode via the Xbox CW app will be able to access extra content, including character bios and a map of The Originals' New Orleans setting, that are not available anywhere else.
The CW's exec VP of marketing, Rick Haskins, tells Variety that other CW shows will also likely make use of the SmartGlass experience soon, listing Arrow as a specific example.
