Del Toro to Develop Monster for HBO with Doctor Who Writer

Guillermo Del Toro is teaming-up with Sherlock and Doctor Who writer Steven Thompson to develop Naoki Urasawa's Monster as a television series for HBO, Deadline reports. The 18-volume manga series has been adapted previously as anime, and is described as, “a thriller about the worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year-old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.”

Thompson will write the screenplay for the pilot with Del Toro set to direct. The pair will also co-executive produce alongside Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford and Exile’s Gary Ungar. Shogakukan, the Japanese publisher of the manga volumes, will act as a consulting producer.

We will keep you updated as details on the project emerge.
