Sony Xperia Z Available Now, Unlocked for $630

After receiving our first look at Sony's Xperia Z smartphone at CES, we've wondered about pricing and carriers in relation to a North American release. Today, the new flagship Sony phone is finally available in the U.S., but with a couple caveats. As mentioned by Engadget, there's no sign of a subsidized option, and a distinct lack of LTE-ready models.

The U.S. Sony Store is now selling an unlocked Xperia Z for $630. The device is available in either black, white, or purple finishes. But even if you're willing to splurge for an Xperia Z right away, you'll only have access to HSPA+ 3G.

But at the same time, Sony has lowered the price of the related Xperia ZL, which is capable of jumping onto LTE networks. For $630 you're essentially receiving a smartphone with the same hardware as the Xperia Z, but sacrificing the water-resistant capabilities touted by Sony since the device's reveal earlier this year.

Sony recently started accepting pre-orders for the super thin Xperia Z tablet, which is available in 16GB and 32GB models for $500 and $600, respectively.
